About

My grandmother sent my brother a diary that belonged to her grandfather. He lived from 1840 until 1920. After reading, my brother wrote these lyrics and asked me to put music to it for grandma.

Lyrics

I was hell-bound and running
Thought I was full grown
When I kissed good-bye my momma
And set out on my own
Though I hated so to leave her
At the time she was so frail
When I took to driving cattle
Down the Santa Fe trail

I was just a lad of sixteen
When i took it in my stride
The long hard days of hauling
Were so rough I nearly died
But wintered at Fort Bridger
And I vowed I wouldn't fail
To driving in the springtime
On the Santa Fe trail

Well I must of lived too long
How the times it passed me by
When folks could talk through wires
Men had learned to fly
When the steamed locomotives
Carried everything by rail
It put an end to my drivin'
On the Santa Fe trail

So I went back to Missouri
Settled down and wed
Gave up a life driving
Took to sherrifin' instead
In a town of independence
Where I ran the city jail
And only dreamed of
Drivin' on the Santa Fe trail
On that Santa Fe trail
Oh that Santa Fe trail
Just dream about drivin'
Oh that Santa Fe trail
